Junction improvements in Ibadan, not just installation of traffic lights — Oyo govt.

By David Adeoye, Ibadan.

The Oyo State Government says the recently awarded contract for Phase II Junction Improvement project in Ibadan, the state capital, is not only for installation of traffic lights.

The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, made the clarification in a statement on Friday in Ibadan.

“The improvement works, to be carried out with the sum of N10.3 billion, are not just for traffic lights.

“The clarification is necessary to carry along the good people of Oyo State, as it is the practice of the present administration.

“You know that Gov. Seyi Makinde is all about honesty and transparency in all activities,” he said.

Olatunbosun said that similar projects that had been carried out at the Challenge and Felele Junctions in the Ibadan metropolis.

He said that the improvement works at Agodi Gate, Idi-Ape Civic Centre and University of Ibadan Junctions included demolition of structures; alignment and reconfiguration of road geometry; road architecture, kerbs and lane demarcation.

Others are traffic signals; traffic signs; wire mesh to cordon off certain areas; road/lane markings; pedestrian walkways; drainage and landscaping/horticulture.

The commissioner also said that the project, which would involve nine junctions and 69 lane interactions, would include bus shelters and lay-bys for taxis and motorcycles.

Olatunbosun said the project would affect three junctions —  Agodi Gate, Idi-Ape Civic Centre and University of Ibadan Junctions.

He said that Phase I of the project covered the Challenge and Felele Junctions in Ibadan.

He said that contract for the junction improvements project, which was awarded to Messrs Planet Projects Ltd., would be completed in nine months.

“The economic impact of road construction and improvements are significant as they have a multiplier effect of creating wealth that can easily be applied to other projects,” Olatunbosun added.
