Gov. Gboyega Oyetola of Osun on Wednesday in Osogbo inaugurated the Governing Council of the University of Ilesa,
He named the immediate-past Minister of Health and former Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole, as the Chairman of the Council.
Oyetola said that the idea of the new university became expedient to further expand access to qualitative education and other opportunities for the young population.
“As a state known for excellence in all spheres, we envision a citadel of excellence that will enter the nation’s educational space.
“The university will enter the nation’s educational space as a leader in the tripartite mandate of teaching, research and community service.
“It will produce competitive graduates who will rule their world and transform the state’s economy, in line with our development agenda.
“In order to also underscore our commitment to excellence, we employed the services of KPMG to offer advisory services on the smooth take-off of the university,’’ he said.
KPMG International Ltd. is a multinational professional services network that provides consultancies particularly in financial issues.
“I urge the council members to ingrain in the university staff the principles of impeccable university governance, merit-driven appointment of staff and students’ admission,’’ the governor charged.
Responding on behalf of members of the council, Chief Akinwande Akinola, pioneer General Manager, International Breweries Ltd., a member, assured of their readiness to hit the ground running.
“It is a great honour that has been bestowed on all of us to be part of the pioneer Governing Council of this great university.
“I am responding on behalf of the Chairman and we can assure you that you have given us an enduring legacy,’’ he said.
Other members of the Council are Chief Akinwande Akinola; Prof. Sola Akinrinade, pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Osun State University and Chief Bayo Jimoh, former Group Managing Director, Odua Investments Group of Companies.
Dr Charles ‘Diji Akinola, Chief of Staff to the Governor of Osun State, Prof. Labo Popoola, former Vice-Chancellor, Osun State University, Osogbo, are also council members.
Others still are Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade, former Vice-Chancellor, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ogun State; Mr Rasheed Sarumi, Group Managing Director, SaroAfrica and a Representative of the National Universities Commission.
Recall that Gov. Oyetola announced the upgrading of the state’s College of Education, Ilesa, to a full-fledged university on March 31.
He subsequently signed the Bill upgrading the college to a university into law on Sept. 27.
The decision brings the number of universities in Osun to 11.
Universities in Osun are the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, owned by the Federal Government, Osun State University, Osogbo, and University of Ilesa, owned by the state government.
Others are Adeleke University, Ede, Bowen University, Iwo, Fountain Unveristy, Oshogbo, and Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji-Arakeji
Others still are Kings University, Ode Omu, Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu, Redeemer’s University, Ede and Westland University Iwo.
