By Hamza Suleiman, Maiduguri.
The Borno State Government on Monday released N700 million for the payment of leave grants and outstanding gratuities to local government staff in the state.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Emirates Affairs, Malam Sugun Mai-Mele, who disclosed this to newsmen in Maiduguri, said that Gov. Babagana Zulum gave the approval for the 27 local government areas in the state.
Mai-Mele, however, warned the heads of the local government councils against diversion of the funds, saying that they should ensure the proper supervision of the payment of the funds to beneficiaries.
He also warned the civil servants against paying any kickback to anybody.
The commissioner reiterated that the government would not be happy if the money was diverted for any purpose, warning that anyone found wanting would be sanctioned accordingly.
He solicited the support of all workers, National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and other workers’ unions in the state to move the state forward.
