The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the alleged killing of a 22-year-old lady, Miss Ummukulthum Sani, in Kano by Mr Gheng Chu, a Chinese national based in the state, on Friday evening.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the alleged murder at a press conference on Saturday in Kano.

Haruna said that the police command received a distress call on Friday evening around 10 p.m. and the Commissioner of Police, Mr Lawal Abubakar, dispatched a team to the scene.

He said: “The 47-year-old Chinese visited the residence of his girlfriend, Miss Ummukulthum Sani, 22, and they engaged in an argument before he allegedly stabbed her many times with a knife.”

Haruna said that when the police team reached the scene of the incident they rushed the victim to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, where she was confirmed dead.

The PPRO, who confirmed the arrest of the suspect, said that the police had launched an in-depth investigation into the case, following the order of the Commissioner of Police.

Narrating the incident to newsmen on Saturday, Ummukulthum’s mother confirmed that her daughter was in relationship with the suspect before she got married about three years ago.

She, however, said that the marriage broke down after three months, which made the Chinese to stalk their house, although her daughter never paid attention to him.

“But on that fateful Friday evening, the sound of his knock on the gate was too disturbing and I decided to open it, and he pushed me and gained entrance to her room.

“He stabbed her multiple times with a knife in spite my struggle to rescue her, and my cries for help were also not noticeable due to the heavy rain,” she said.

Ummukulthum’s mother said that a passer-by overheard the scream in the room, gained entrance to the room through the window and got hold of Chu.

She said that her daughter was rushed to the hospital by people who came to her rescue but she was eventually confirmed dead.

The late Ummukulthum Sani was a youth corps member, who was serving in Sokoto State before her demise.

It was gathered that she was in a relationship with Chu when she met her ex-husband and the Chinese man reportedly supported the marriage.

It was also learnt that when Chu heard of Ummukulthum’s divorce, he returned to her but she reportedly refused to accept him back.
