The Bauchi State House of Assembly has called on government at all levels to provide support for persons affected by flood disaster in the state.
The House made the after approving a motion on a matter of urgent public importance, moved by Assemblyman Ado Wakili (APC-Bura) at its plenary on Tuesday.
Wakili said that the call was imperative to provide emergency response and mitigate the effects of flood disaster on the affected communities across the 20 local government areas of the state.
In his contribution, Assemblyman Tijjani Aliyu, Majority Leader of the House, urged the state government to empower the State Emergency Management Agency with the wherewithal to enable it to render assistance to the victims.
Besides, Assemblyman Musa Nakwada (PDP- Bogoro), underscored the need for construction of drains and desilting of blocked waterways to control the incidence of flooding.
“It is disheartening that hundreds of houses and several hectares of farmlands were submerged in the flood-affected communities, while residents are currently seeking shelter at public buildings.
“The flood has not only damaged properties and endangered human lives and animals but also produced other secondary effects like outbreak of malaria and cholera,” he said.
The Speaker, Abubakar Sulaiman, put the motion into a voice vote and it was unanimously adopted by the House.
The Speaker immediately directed the Clerk of the House, Umar Gital, to transmit the message to the executive arm of government.
