Ibadan building collapse: Oyo govt. to investigate, sanction culprits

By David Adeoye, Ibadan.

The Oyo State Government will investigate the cause of the collapse of a four-storey building in the Bodija area of Ibadan, which occurred on Thursday morning.

The Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr Olusegun Olayiwola, disclosed this when he led some government functionaries to the scene of the incident.

He stressed that after the investigation, those found culpable would be fully sanctioned, so as to serve as deterrent to others.

Speaking with newsmen during the inspection, the commissioner observed that substandard materials were used for the construction.

He also noted that land allocated for the building project was not suitable for the kind of structure being erected on it.

Besides, Olayiwola stressed that the contractor handling the project failed to follow the established procedures for constructing buildings in the state.

The commissioner promised to present the ministry’s findings to the deputy governor for necessary action.

He, however, enjoined developers in the state to always engage the services of professionals whenever they wanted to construct buildings, in order to avoid any kind of disaster.

The four-storey building, which is under construction, collapsed in the early hours of Thursday, leaving at least seven persons injured.
