The Police Command in Ogun has arrested a 39-year-old man, Oladapo Akinola, for allegedly defiling his five-year-old stepdaughter in the Shokori neighbourhood of Abeokuta.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, made this known in a statement on Tuesday in Ota, Ogun.
Oyeyemi said that the suspect was arrested on Monday, Sept. 20, following a report lodged at the Adigbe Police Divisional Headquarters by the mother of the victim.
He added that the mother of the victim said that while bathing her daughter, she discovered blood in her private part.
The PPRO added that the woman later learnt that her husband, who was the stepfather of the victim, had unlawful carnal knowledge of her daughter.
“Upon the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Adigbe Division, SP Fatoberu Oyekanmi, detailed detectives to the scene where the suspect was promptly arrested.
“On interrogation, the suspect, who resides at Adewale Drive, Shokori, Abeokuta, confessed to the crime without any justifiable reason,” he said.
Oyeyemi said that the girl had been taken to hospital by the police for medical treatment and report.
He said that the Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, had ordered the transfer of the suspect to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and eventual prosecution.
He added that the police commissioner warned parents, especially mothers, to always be observant about their female children, so as to prevent them from becoming victims of sexual assault.
