Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno State on Monday in Maiduguri laid the foundation for the construction of Al-Ansar University, the first privately-owned university in the state.
In his address at the event, Zulum, whose administration allocated 100 hectares of land to Al-Ansar Foundation for the university, also directed the construction of a 2.3-kilometre road and a borehole in the university.
He also enjoined the Ministry of Higher Education to liaise with the founder of the university to see how government could further support the project.
The governor, who reiterated the commitment of his administration to promoting education in the state, pledged similar support for anyone who wanted to invest in the provision of quality education in Borno.
“We are very much willing to support any individual or group willing to partner the state government in order to provide the much-needed qualitative education to our children at all levels,” Zulum said.
In his remarks, Dr Muhammad Kyari Dikwa, the founder of the university and President of Al-Ansar Foundation, said that the university would start off with two colleges.
Dikwa lauded the Zukum-administration for its commitment to education in the state and assured it of sustained investments in the education sector of the state.
