The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has called on citizens to take precautionary fire safety measures during the festive season.
The Controller-General of FFS, Ibrahim Liman, made the call in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday.
Liman said that due to the Harmattan, there could be high propensity for fire outbreaks, adding that it had, therefore, become imperative for the citizens to be more careful while handling anything fire related.
“The Harmattan is a season that records high number of fire incidents due to the dry wind and activities which could result in fire.
“All citizens must be extremely careful while celebrating Christmas, as the Yuletide comes with a lot of activities such as cooking and fireworks,” he said.
Liman warned that all electrical appliances in offices and business places should be disconnected when they were not in use.
“Generators and gas cylinders must be kept outside the home; children should be carefully monitored and not allowed to play with matches or lighters,” he said.
Liman also underscored the need to install at homes fire prevention and suppression equipment, such as smoke detectors and fire alarms, while having at least, one fire extinguisher in homes and cars.
He assured all citizens of the support of the service in responding to all emergency calls during the festive season.
He urged them to call 112 or 08032003557 for fire emergency services.
