The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Mr Salami Bolaji, has described Thursday’s fire incident at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Headquarters, Akure, as an unfortunate occurrence.
Bolaji made the remark on Friday when he visited the scene of the inferno which reportedly destroyed two container loads of INEC card readers and stationeries.
The fire destroyed no fewer than 5,141 card readers stocked for the Oct. 10 governorship election in the state.
He said that the police command, in conjunction with INEC management and Ondo State Fire Service, would launch an investigation into the cause of the fire outbreak.
Salami said it was regrettable that the incident happened, barely a month to the governorship election.
He, however, assured all the law-abiding citizens of adequate security during the poll.
He said that people should not to entertain any fear, as the police command was fully prepared to provide adequate police protection for the state.
The Salami, nonetheless, warned those harbouring criminal ideas — before, during or after the election — to jettison such ideas.
He added that anyone found fomenting trouble would be arrested and detained.
